“Should I take probiotics while taking antibiotics?”
May 28, 2024Sometimes taking antibiotics is necessary, even life-saving. But, as the name suggests - “anti” + “bio (life)” these drugs kill beneficial bacteria while killing the harmful ones. Which is why antibiotics can do a number on your gut.
Which brings up the question “Should I take probiotics while taking antibiotics?”
The answer is: Maybe while taking the antibiotics, and definitely after you finish the course of antibiotics.
Taking probiotics while on antibiotics means that some portion of the beneficial bacteria in the supplement will be killed by the drug, so you may or may not be getting any benefit. My thoughts are it’s worthwhile to take a dose or two a day, but you must take the probiotic as far from your antibiotic doses as possible. If you take the probiotic close to when you take the antibiotic, those good bacteria are doomed.
Once you are done with the antibiotics, DEFINITELY take a probiotic supplement for at least one month, if not longer. While probiotic foods are great, after taking antibiotics you need the higher concentrations found in a supplement.
When choosing a probiotic, you want to be sure the bacteria have been well cared for before purchasing the product, or there is no point in taking it! Energy Matters carries a highly effective line of well-vetted probiotics to help you in your gut recovery.
