Summer Sipping II: Recipes for Tasty Hydration

Jul 16, 2024

A few weeks ago we shared some tips on staying hydrated in the summer, suggesting a few beverage options including electrolyte powders. Premade powders are a great resource, especially if you are very active or have trouble with chronic dehydration, but homemade hydrating beverages can save you money, let you control the amount of sugar and minerals, customize the taste, and avoid ingredients like colorings and flavorings. You’ll end up with a delicious mocktail that leaves you feeling refreshed and ready for summer fun.

Basic Homemade Hydration Beverage

  • 2 cups water, coconut water or cooled herbal tea

  • ⅛ - ¼ tsp of unrefined sea salt or himalayan salt

  • ¼ cup of juice

Shake and drink!

Optional add-ins include flavorings like fresh herbs such as ginger or mint, sweeteners such as sugar or honey, especially if you use a tart juice like lemon or lime, and additional minerals such as calcium-magnesium powder. Here’s a few tasty combinations to try:

Pomegranate-Lime Chiller: use pomegranate juice with a splash of lime juice in a base of plain water. Cherry juice is also delicious with lime.

Coconut Quencher: use coconut water as your base and pineapple juice as a mix-in

Hibiscus Hydrator: Brew hibiscus tea with a stick of cinnamon and chill it (or use the cold-infusion method). Add orange juice or slices as your mix-in.

Do you have a favorite summer sipping flavor combination?

Cheers to Hydration Happy Hour!
